Can Honeybees Harm the Environment?

Can Honeybees Harm the Environment?

The answer is not what you might think. It may come as a surprise that a company named "Our Apiary" supports the notion that honeybees can harm the environment. Of course, the answer is always more complicated than a simple yes or no. Honeybees are, without a doubt, incredibly important to agriculture in the United States. They facilitate pollination for a majority of the crops consumed nationwide. At their lowest population, appropriate concern was raised over the well-being of farmers whose fields began to produce less and less. In 2024, however, it has been estimated that bees are nearing record numbers (source). Well, what does that mean? Great, right?

Not exactly, while honeybees pollinate a majority of crops when in excess numbers, they can drive away native pollinators like butterflies, moths, beetles, flies, midges, and even gnats. Until recently, I thought the bees still needed to be saved. I thought that supporting the development of new apiaries would be of service to the environment. I, unfortunately, was mistaken. The proceeds from our bee design will be going to The Ocean Cleanup instead of a honeybee nonprofit. This was a hard decision to make, and I feel my lack of initial research and reliance on old information is to blame. At least this misjudgment was caught sooner than later.

Though, I am proud to say that the Ocean Cleanup is actually doing an incredible service to the community. They work globally to develop and implement new technologies to block floods of trash in rivers and waterways, as well as work to reduce the size of the Pacific garbage patch. They are people we can trust, and we are currently working to become official independent supporters!
